Turns out, I’m an Indigenous Amazonian.
No really. It’s true.
I’m also Iberian, Scandinavian, and African. Who knew?!
I’ve always had some blind spots when it comes to my heritage, and so my wife got me a DNA test kit from My Heritage (…on discount…through Amazon…’cause that’s how we roll!) Get yours here.
So I swabbed my cheeks, sent in the kit, and waited. It’s funny. When you create your account, they make you read all the fine print with some crazy stuff like, “I promise I won’t sue if the results significantly change my worldview.” Or “I promise I won’t sue if I don’t like my results.” Their terms sounded way more professional, but you get the point. Apparently, there have been people who really couldn’t cope with what they learned about themselves.
Finally, after several weeks, I got an email with my results. They had put together a fun little video that took me all over the different regions of my DNA, accompanied by regionally appropriate music…nice touch. So, here are the results:

There it is. That is who I am….er….wait. Correction. That is WHAT I am. WHO I am can’t be boiled down to a pie chart and percentages. Right?
People are more than percentages.
My three kids are daily reminders of this. Same DNA in each one…and they couldn’t be more different.

As they get older, I will definitely let them know about my heritage, because that is part of their heritage. But I will also make sure they understand that doesn’t put them in a box.
You put STUFF in a box, not PEOPLE.
